So I installed WordPress 2.2.2 via Fantastico through Bluehost.com - I was really impressed at the beginning, but have read a few posts here that the auto-upgrades don't work so well...

    My plan is to:
    1. Backup the full site
    1b. deactivate all plugins.
    2. Clean out the extra files, directories, and plugins
[this is where I'm a little unsure, can I just delete everything in the FTP to my site and install the 2.3.1 files?
    3. Install 2.3.1 as fresh as possible
    4. Import my current site into that environment from the full backup.

Is that possible or do I need to keep the 2.2.2 files to upgrade via the webpage and upgrade to 2.3.1?

Anyone have any insight if this will work?

Sounds right to me although you want to save the content of your wp-content directory as well as your information out of wp-config.php

    Reference: Upgrading_WordPress

You may also have to check to see if your theme needs to be upgraded. One of the stickies here covers that if you see errors mentioning your categories.

Your step 4--don't see the necessity of of import. I'd think your step 4 would be to browse to upgrade.php to cause your database tables to be upgraded.
