• I couldn’t find a solution on this problem yet. Eventhough it’s almost one year old, it still appears. Hopefully someone could help!

    Full text of error reads:

FTP credentials don’t allow to write to file /home/xxxxx/public_html/.htaccess
W3 Total Cache Error: Files and directories could not be automatically created to complete the installation.
Please execute commands manually [button: view required changes]
or use FTP form to allow W3 Total Cache make it automatically. [button: update via FTP]

    Anyone?

  • I’m having the same problem and I’ve used w3 for years. Now it gives me this error when I updated my site. I uninstalled all plugins and reinstalled them. Now it’s broken. great

    fetenflo this may help you.
I got it to work by doing the following:
    1. I deactivated, deleted files, and deleted w3 total cache.
    2. I logged into my host control panel and went to the file directory.
    3. I found the wp content folder and highlighted it. Then selected permissions and set them to 777.
    4. I found the wp content/uploads folder and did the same.
    5. my error said it was having a problem deleting the config file inside wp content, so I selected that and set it to 777.
    6. then I reinstalled and activated the plugin. It worked fine.
I set the permissions on those files back to 755.
    The plugin still works.

For you, I would also set permissions to 777 for your htaccess file until you finish installing w3

Sadly, this solutions didn’t work for me. I’ve detailed my tests and attempts at troubleshooting this at the following thread:
