    Hi there,
I am looking for voice recognition software to help me create my posts. I am having health issues that are causing me to have trouble typing. Can anybody make any suggestions? I've been googling but haven't found too much info about voice rec software and WordPress.

    Thank you,
    MB

    What are you using now?

Nothing. I'm still typing, but I'm in pain.

I have been thinking of downloading one of them maybe a trial, but i am wondering what others have experienced, what one works best, what one doesn't. I'd like to be able to insert media by voice command and tell it to preview, post etc, as much hands free as possible. I have a feeling that is not going to happen.

    Thank you,
    MB

Any VR software should work with WordPress but I've used Dragon Naturally Speaking with WP myself and it works pretty well once you get past the training period (about 2 weeks).

Thanks Esmi. Do you know if you can create commands like inserting media, previewing and posting?

Yes. Effectively, if you can "say" the text, Dragon can find it and move the focus to it. You get extra bells & whistles if you use it in conjunction with IE but it's still eminently usable in Firefox (which I what I used it with for 6 months).

Using the new Add Media might be a bit more cumbersome as the files don't have displayed names/titles, so - at worst - you'll have tab through the thumbnails to get to the image that you want or use the Search option if you know the title of the image. Hopefully, that's something that we can change in future versions of WordPress via input from
Make WordPress Accessible. Other than that, I'm not aware of any major problems for VR users right now. Certainly I think we've managed to address some issues in Appearance -> Menus in WordPress 3.6 and there are plans to improve Appearance -> Widgets further (you can use the accessibility option for now).

Do feel free to join Make WordPress Accessible if you'd like to lend a hand and give us your feedback/thoughts.

Thank you so much, this helps a lot. I thought my blogging days might be over. I will check out the Accessibility group.

Absolutely not! :-) I not only blogged (with WordPress) whilst using Dragon but I even managed to carry on coding. WordPress is currently pretty good accessibility-wise. It's not perfect and there is room for improvement but, overall, it has a pretty strong, well-coded, foundation that makes interaction with assistive technology (like voice recognition software) a lot easier.
