[resolved] Visual editor Issues after 3.5 upgrade (28 posts)

    Hi

    Yesterday I had an automatic upgrade to 3.5, I didn't do anything manually, and now I cannot edit posts using visual. The icon is there but it won't allow me to click on it and there are no tools. I am able to add media in the new format though when I do it doesn't appear.

    My main issue is visual as I am clueless about code.

    I have read through some other forums with similar issues and have taken the following steps but the problem still persists.

    - Cleaned the cache
    - Tried on Firefox and IE (I am using Chrome) so it is not a browser issue.
    - Switched to Twenty Eleven theme and back to my current theme (Bangkok Press)
    -Uninstalled and then re-installed all the plug ins.

    I have read about inserting code in a wp-config.php folder but I don't have any folders on my computer associated with WP.

    Any info to fix this would be greatly appreciated, as I said I am clueless with code.

    -Try adding this to the wp-config.php: define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false); to the bottom of your wp-config.php file (just before the require_once line). First, make sure that your browser has JavaScript enabled.

    Hi, t-p

    Thanks for the info but unfortunately that didn't work, however it has changed it somewhat - now there is no option for visual or html(i'm sorry I can't remember if the second option other than visual was html or something else) and it is just the non visual version. Some of the tool bar has also returned, such as bold, quote, full screen but none of it helpful.

    Still not fixed. Any other suggestions from anyone? I have been reading a lot of similar issues after this upgrade from other users. Am I to assume it is a big that may be fixed by wp?

    So many people do according to other threads but nothing seems to be working. No way to contact wordpress directly, I am hoping this is a bug that will be resolved quickly.

  6. 1. Deactivate ALL plugins.
    2. Switch to TwentyTwelve theme.
    3. MANUALLY empty and clear your browser cache.

    These first three steps are VERY important in troubleshooting. Especially step 3. If you don't know how to manually empty your browser cache... Google is your friend!

    Try these steps and let me know.

    I actually already took these steps - I did just do them again to make sure, but unfortunately no luck..... still not resolved.

    Thanks for the tip but unfortunately it didn't work. I have been following a couple of other threads and followed some steps mentioned by others with no luck either.

    I am at a loss and this hasn't been answered by a moderator in days. Does anyone know another option to contact WP?

    This is it, you've contacted WordPress by posting on the forum. ;) Also? Moderators aren't responsible for providing help. We can of course and it's cool when anyone (including yourself) provides support but we're here to moderate the forums.

    From the top:

    - What's the link to your site? That often can help.

    - Switch your theme to Twenty Eleven. Yes, do this, it's temporary but needs to be done as a troubleshooting step.

    - Deactivate all of your plugins. All of them, no exceptions.

    - Clear your browser cache and cookies. Many people leave out this step after doing the theme and plugins. Javascript can be cached on your browser so after you do the other steps you must do this one too.

    - Log back in and try the visual editor.

    If it did not work (do not leave out a step) then enable the javascript console on your browser.

    Leave everything as it is now, clear the browser cache and cookies and report back to us here (not on another thread) what errors your console shows with Twenty Eleven and all plugins deactivated.

    And if you can confirm or provide a link to a non-working installation then that may help too.

    Hi Jan, thanks for getting back to me.

    I have re-done all these steps again, not missing one out and Javascript is still enabled. No success unfortunately.

    The link for my site is http://nataliepeart.com The content is missing as it is still on the Twenty Eleven theme, it is usually Bangkok Press if that helps.

  13. It looks like you've got at least the following plugins on your site:

    cardoza-facebook-like-box/
    follow-me/
    wp-easy-gallery/

    You are running WP-SuperCache too.

    And the theme is still not Twenty Eleven...

    When the Visual Editor doesn't work it's always either Javascript or your web server isn't sending the files correctly for the browser.

    When it's not working what does the Javascript console say on your browser? Do you see any errors in your wen server's error or access log? Your host provider may need to explain to you how to find and access those logs.

    Hi, thanks. I am using those three plugins but they are not activated at present and it is 100% Twenty Eleven, if I could attach a file I would send you a screen shot.

    Really not sure about the files, wouldn't know where to look but I will contact my host and see, and I have actually already contacted my theme so I will see what they say.

    You may have a caching issue then. The plugins I referenced came when I loaded up your site. Except for looking at the HTML your server sends I have no access to your installation (don't want access either) and that's what I'd gotten back via my browser. ;)

    Oh, OK...when I go to my site now it is basically a blank Twenty Eleven theme with no content, as if it is a new site aside from my menu but with nothing in the pages when you click.

    Also, not sure if you mean my WP account with caching or my machine as the problem is on my laptop I am using now, my work computer and also my playbook.

    I will see what the theme says and check my access log and let you know.

    Update: I found the error log easily and there are no errors reported, I have only had the site a couple of months and it isn't live so I haven't done that much to it. The javascript console says nothing at all!

    I have the same problem. Added to that: I had trouble redirecting pages. It led to a load of broken links on many of my images, and, accidentally when selecting to unlink them, I deleted them all. It sucks to update sometimes but one needs to understand it is a necessary evil.

    So my cache is cleaned, the browser is cleaned, Javascript is enabled. The plugins deactivated. Did I miss anything? I need the "visual" back so I can put my pictures back where they belong. :(

    All in all, I appreciate there is an army of good, supportive, and knowledgeable developers to offer support. You guys deserve the best.

  19. That's really and truly bizzarre.

    Since it's not a live installation do you feel up to trying a trick?

    - Make a backup of your wp-config.php and .htaccess files.

    - Copy the wp-config.php file to wp-config-SAVE.php and .htaccess to .htaccess-SAVE` (I like many safety nets).

    - Delete the .htaccess file (you did make a copy right?)

    - In wp-config.php edit the $table_prefix from

    /**
     * WordPress Database Table prefix.
     *
     * You can have multiple installations in one database if you give each a unique
     * prefix. Only numbers, letters, and underscores please!
     */
    $table_prefix  = 'wp_';

    to

    $table_prefix  = 'wp2_';

    - Once again clear your cookies and cache on your browser.

    - Visit your URL and you'll be sent to the install page. Put in anything you want there, it's just for testing.

    That will not get rid of your old tables but will make your WordPress default to a fresh installation.

    Your old install will be intact (I really like safety nets) but this will hopefully 100% rule out any settings issues.

    If you want to put it all back then copy the saved wp-config.php and .htaccess files back to the original places.

    Wow, this is so beyond my knowledge base and your instructions make my brain cry a little...I don't understand why there are so many people with the same/similar issue but not one fix. Is there no other way?

    If not, I will need to go to my host and undergo a complete copy of my site as it is as I don't trust myself not to mess this up some way and I have so much writing and photography on it and have spent weeks designing it the way I want it. I am not computer literate, I don't want to do this again.

    In the mean time when you say copy files do you mean copy and paste the code to notebook or something for the backup?

    There are many fixes, but they are different for each particular problem. Different problems can cause the same results, what Jan is trying to do is to help you find the actual cause of your particular problem, in order to give you a solution.

    Now, looking at your site, I don't see the TwentyEleven theme, and I do see plugins activated, so presumably you switched them all back on and such after testing, but that also makes it difficult for people to diagnose the issue remotely.

    If you want to send me login information for your site, I'd be happy to look at it and see if I could duplicate the issue directly. Might be quicker. You can email me at otto@wordpress.org and I'll log in and take a look for you.

    Yes, sorry I did just change my theme back when I came in from work to check something, though I haven't activated plug ins if that means anything.

    Thankyou, I will email you now. I am not trying to be rude, I understand that both you and Jam and the other moderators are doing great voluntary work that people take for granted, I honestly do appreciate it. I just naively did't expect such issues. I do appreciate it.

    NataliePee: Your email went to spam for me at first, so I didn't get it last night. I found it a little while ago.

    Your problem appears to be that you had the Visual Editor box disabled via your User Profile page. I turned that checkbox there off and the Visual Editor shows up now when I'm logged in as you. Log in and test it yourself.

    Indeed that was all that was wrong. I don't think Otto will believe me but I genuinely did try that after reading it in forums, so not sure if it changed back after trouble shooting or what, not sure.

    Either way it is fixed. Thanks so much for everyones help.

    I had the same issue. Don't do any thing just upgrade all your plugins and it will work like charm. (especially the security plugins)

    I have the same problem..tried all the steps but nothing worked, could you please help me?The native editor looks broken, and when I try to put in text it only saves less random words. The tinyMCE editor is not working at all..The url is http://www.yourbodypotential.com but I currently have the maintenance plugin since it's not ready to go live.

    Let me know if I need to remove this.

    As per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic. Posting in an existing topic prevents from being able to track issues by topic. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Also, It's easier for volunteers to help you if you have your own topic.

    Also, if you noticed, this thread is marked "resolved" :)
