Viewing archives by category and months, years (6 posts)

I have been working with WordPress for about a year now, having come over from Movable Type.

I have been beating my head against the wall for days trying to figure out how to simply view the archives of a single category, and how to see them by month, year, etc. This seems like such a simple, basic need, and yet it's not possible in WordPress without some kind of hack.

I have searched the support, tried dozens of hacks and plugins, and have not yet found what I'm looking for. Is it right under my nose and I'm missing it?

For example: Imagine you're making a website called "Fruit" with a basic WordPress installation. When one visits the category "Apples" you get page with the most recent posts about Apples. Great! You can even click on "previous" and see previous "Apples" posts.

But if you're looking at "Apples", and click a month on the sidebar under "Archives", you get a listing of not just "Apple" category posts, but all categories including "Peaches", "Pears", "Oranges", etc.

This does not seem logical to me. Am I the only one that feels this way? Is there a simple way to do what I'm looking for?

One method (you may consider it a hack, but it's built into WordPress) is to append a query to the category on a dated archive url:

(examples assume use of custom permalinks):

    archives/2006/?category_name=apples

Or alternatively, archive date to category url:

    category/apples/?year=2006&monthnum=10

Obviously the above is done manually, but a script or plugin could generate these category/archive links.

    Kafkaesqui,
I'm attempting to do the same thing. This sounds like a good way to go, but I don't know where I would use this url. Would you mind giving a little more instruction?
    Thanks.

Kaf hasn't been around for about 4 months... but he said above: "it is done manually". Meaning you use it = type manually wherever you want to have such a link.

    kafkaesqui:

you could even skip using custom permilinks and use:
    ?year=2007&monthnum=7&category_name=photos

If you want an archives page, you can also use the KG-archives plugin (i'll let you google it), you can chose how to sort the way the archives are displayed in it.

But - unless I am mistaken - the page generated by the plugin contains only titles of blog notes, not the summaries.
