[resolved] "View Post" Not Opening in New Window (6 posts)

In older versions of WP, when I clicked on the "View Post" button for a post which has already been published, the post would open in a new window. Since I downloaded 3.5, the post opens in the same window. I have two blogs with different themes, and this now occurs with both of them. I deactivated plug-ins & cleared browser cache manually, plus tried it with the Twenty Twelve theme, but the issue persists. This happens with both Firefox and IE. Appreciate any help/advice.

  2. You're right, I hadn't noticed this and can't remember if it ever opened in a new window.
The preview changes opens in a new window. I'm not sure if this can be modified, but an easy thing to do would simply be to use your right click to open a new window.

  3. Your question led me to dig a bit deeper and it seems as though this opening a new window vs not is a bit of a contentious issue.

Thanks for the feedback, Christine. When you wrote

I hadn't noticed this and can't remember if it ever opened in a new window.
, for me it's opened in a new window for all the three years I've been using WP. Thanks also for including those links, and I can see why you call it a contentious issue. For me, I prefer to have a finished post in the new window for social media purposes -- i.e., sharing the post on Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, etc. I'm not using that function to continue editing the post, which some people seem to be doing. I know the preview button opens in a new window, but that's gone once the post has been published; I know that the "preview changes" button opens in a new window, but that doesn't show the post's url, which is part of what I need for some of the sharing I'm doing. Finally I'm not sure what you mean by using the right click to open a new window -- are you talking about something I can do that would have the post itself open in a new window? I can't see where any of the options which come up when I right-click would do that. If you just mean that I can open a new window and copy/paste the url of the post into it, that's what I have been doing since this came up. Anyway, it seems like what would be a good solution -- as mentioned in the discussion linked first -- is for the user to be able to set view post to either same window or new window.

an easy thing to do would simply be to use your right click to open a new window.

Actually, now I see what you mean, Christine. I need to hold my cursor at "View Post" and right-click to open in a new tab or window. That's fine with me to handle it that way -- as long as that option continues to be available, of course.

    Thanks for all your help.

that rightclick trick will only work if the post is already saved, If not if will not show the changes. Its currently still happneing in some cases (like me). :(
