[resolved] Very slow load time, site intermittently timing out (13 posts)

Could someone please help me out? I have been having problems with slow load times on my site for months. Sometimes the site loads after a long wait. Often, I receive a "500 - Internal Server Error" or the error that says "*Fatal error*: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in [location changes every time I refresh]."

I have disabled all of my plug-ins, with no success. I assume there is something wrong in my code, but I do not know enough about coding or database structure to figure it out myself.

Can anyone provide some advice to help me with this? It is becoming a major problem for my site. Please keep in mind that I am very inexperienced.

My site is http://pittsburghlumberco.com, if that helps. I am using GoDaddy hosting and WordPress 3.01. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

  2. You may need to try a caching plugin.

WP Super Cache and W3 Total Cache are the top of the heap right now.

Thanks for the response. I tried WP Super Cache a while back. It didn't seem to help much, though. I'll give W3 Total Cache a look, and see if that is any better.

    Thanks again.

Does anyone else have any ideas? I tried W3 Total Cache, but I am still having issues.

    Thanks.

  5. What are the specs on your server?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but...

    Operating System: Windows
    Hosting Type: Shared Hosting
    .Net Runtime Version: ASP.Net 2.0/3.0/3.5
    PHP Version: PHP 5.x
    IIS Version: IIS 7.0

Let me know if you need any other info. Thanks.

  7. Shared hosting may be at fault, sadly. If your host has oversold the server, you can easily get bogged down :(

I'd open a ticket with GoDaddy. Maybe they can move you to a different shared box?

I have tried repeatedly to get help from GoDaddy. They keep telling me it is a coding issue and that they can't provide support for third party scripting issues. I am not knowledgable enough to know whether they are right, and I don't even know where to start looking for coding errors.

    What is a shared box?

Thanks again for all your help.

  9. Hosting Type: Shared Hosting

That means many other people use your server :) You share it. it is a shared box.

And ... to a degree, GoDaddy is right. They don't support 3rd party tools. That said, a bare-bones WordPress, unless you're getting hit with thousands of hits a day, should be fine. Which is why I think the box you're on is overloaded.

    I would suggest two things.

    1) Consider asking them to move you to a LINUX box (not Windows server, linux). First, more of us here are capable of debugging. Secondly, they're 'more compatible' right now with the majority of WP plugins.

    2) If you don't want to switch to linux, tell them 'I'm getting poor response time on my server. Can you move me to a different shared server?' DO NOT mention WordPress! If they ask for examples, tell 'em your email timed out, or that people are having trouble getting to some plain HTML on your site. Don't mention any web apps.

Sorry for the delayed response. I went ahead and switched over to a LINUX server last night, and also upgraded my hosting package one level. The site has been working flawlessly today, better than it has in months. I assume that was the issue.

Thanks so much for all the help. I didn't think I was ever going to find a solution. Really appreciate it.

Hey Matthew - when you said you upgraded your account, what did you have to start with and what did you upgrade to? I'm having the same problem. I'm changing to a Linux server now (waiting on hold to do so, anyway) and I will have to ask my client about the upgrade, but I don't really know what to tell him about why we'd do it, nor what the right move would be. Thanks in advance!

    tracyberna,

I upgraded from a Windows Economy server to a Linux Deluxe server, and it completely fixed all of my issues. My site has loaded perfectly ever since I upgraded. I'm not sure if the switch from Windows to Linux was the answer, or if it was the switch from Economy to Deluxe, or maybe any change in server would have fixed the issue. Whatever it was, it was a lifesaver.

Good luck. Let me know if you have other questions. I don't know much about this stuff, but I'll do my best to help.
