But the normal (automatic) scan mode seems to randomly choose pages making "before and after" comparisons of page performance somewhat meaningless unless all the pages are very similar (mine aren't).

This is something we're looking at how to address. I'm interested in any input you have.

The problem with using the same pages is that if there is a caching system in place, this can give you falsely high readings on the first scan. This is why P3 scans a collection of random tags, random categories, random posts, etc. By user request, P3 scans a few admin pages, too, as plugins have a different impact on the admin vs. the front-end.

The automatic scan was intended to be zero-configuration and yield the best results for 80% of users. For power users like yourself, P3 includes a manual scan mode. You can use manual mode to repeat a scan on the same set of pages.

In 1.4 (just released) there's a filter you can use to control the pages that are included in the auto scan. Hopefully this gets you closer to your goal! Thanks for the input :-)
