1. Activate Akismet
2. Read all comments before approving theme. If they don’t make sense or do not refer to your post, they’re probably spam.
3. Check all links in comments – including the comment author’s site link. If you do not wish to publish links to any of the sites, feel free to remove them before approving the comment.

I am new to WordPress and am having lots of issues with spam comments. I have it set up to approve before they are posted but does anyone have any other suggestions of how to determine the validity of a comment before I post it? Thank you!
