Keep a list of modified files, because you should upload them seperately. It’s not said they will work with the new version. Same with plugins.
Create a testversion and try it out.

I’m running the latest nightly on my site >> http://www.teezeh.info. But for visitors it looks pretty much like my 1.2..2 site, because i had Kubrick on that one already.
I had to take the mods that i had made to the original Kubrick index.php and move them over to numerous files (mostly header.php, footer.php and sidebar.php) that it has been split up to to support the new themes concept which is being introduced with 1.5.
That took me about ten minutes, i guess. But i was lucky because i was already familiar with the Kubrick code.
The admin interface in 1.5 is much better than before. So give it a try…
