Many wordpress templates do not utilize the full width of the computer screens , but have the content either aligned left or centered which often leaves a space on the sides that can be utilized to display a banner add above the fold or just some random box with featured content. Is there a plugin that can do that ? Or a CSS code ?

Have a look at this Codex page: http://codex.wordpress.org/User:Tomhanna/Adding_Ads_to_Wordpress

This is a good summary of the questions you are asking.

One thing to keep in mind, though:

Many wordpress templates do not utilize the full width of the computer screens, but have the content either aligned left or centered which often leaves a space on the sides

They don't utilize the full width of the screen on your monitor. Be careful expanding the horizontal width of the template too far; you'd be surprised how many people still use lower screen resolution.

    Hope this information helps you,
