I have been blogging using wordpress for the past year. There a couple of things that I am a bit confused about and I am hoping that someone can give me an answer.

    1. I get quite a few comments that I believe are spam comments they are simply repeated comments but appear to be coming from different subscribers.

    2. How can I tell if those that are subscribing are legitimate as there are many that are hotmail.com addresses or outlook.com addresses.

Any insight or help is greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Rob,

    1. You can use Akismet to avoid spam comments.

    2. Do you mean subscribing as registering on your blog?

Spam newsletter subscriptions can be avoided using WangGuard plugin, their also have add-on for MailPoet. I belive MailChimp has their own spam subscription filter.

Spam user registration on your WP blog is different case. First, do you really need users to register on your blog? If not, you can turn registration option off and delete all unnecessary users. WangGuard also can help you with user registration to avoid spam users.

    Don’t ban hotmail/outlook/yahoo/gmail/etc…

    I technically speaking use wordpress@mydomain.com.

I rarely use my hotmail/outlook/yahoo/gmail addresses to register for commenting. However, not everybody has their own e-mail@theirowndomain.com

    Like George said…AKISMET
