I'm having a challenge getting the literary theme work with Sandbox as per http://ntuat.wordpress.com/2006/08/05/hello-world/. I've added the literary skin information as per instructions but there was no skins folder - I created one but it doesn't show up in the presentation folder when I've uploaded it. Thought perhaps it should have gone in the layouts folder but that doesn't show up either. Any suggestions please?

If you are using a wordpress.com blog, you're in the wrong place. These forums are for self-hosted wordpress.
