• Hi everyone,

I am just in the process of using WordPress for the first time, and it’s all going pretty well except for this permalinks issue.

I have a menu that contains all of my categories and also have the categories in the sidebar, in the default manner. When the permalinks are set to the default, all of the links to the categories in both these locations work exactly as they should.

When I set the permalinks to anything but the default, the permalinks work perfectly BUT my menu and the side menu no longer work – they all just go to the default page as though these links are being rewritten too.

I am just using the twentyten theme, and I have no plugins installed.

Any help would be appreciated. I’ve seen lots of posts on permalinks not working, but none that seem to be in the same position as myself.

Please also let me know if there’s any other info I should provide!

A link to your site is probably going to be needed sooner or later, so you might as well give it to us sooner?

OK, so I thought before posting the link I should set the permalinks to the “pretty” style so that the problem could be seen. And lo and behold, today it is just working perfectly normally with my custom structure (/%year%/%postname%).

Super weird, though – I tried it with all the different common settings before, to see if I could get it working. It only worked on default, all the others, it just wouldn’t.

So today I thought I’d try all the common settings again, just to check them – and there’s still weirdness going on. It works perfectly under “Default” and “Numeric”, plus, as I’ve mentioned, with my custom structure.

However on the other settings – “Day and name” and “Month and name”, two of the links in the menu work, and two don’t. The ones not working do the same as before, go to the default page. I can’t see anything that would explain this at all.

Now that my custom structure is working, I’m happy just to leave it at that – but if anyone is interested in this phenomenon let me know and I’ll set it to a non-working permalink structure and post the URL.
