   instead of the default textlink, is there a way to use icons for downloads from a wordpress site such as zip files, etc.?

   Sure. Just have the icons uploaded, replace the link text in the anchor tag with the image/icon path... you know, the usual drill: learn the basics if you want to be a webmaster :)
