• I have a proxy site that I run so I can do stuff at school. A lot of kids at school want to use the site but I have a password on it. Is there a way that I can make it so if they subscribe to my site, they can access it?

  • I have a password on it

    a) the answer you seek is painfully self evident.

    b) Site filter avoidance techniques are not a WordPress related issue. I doubt that anyone here would see any wisdom in advising you on how to put the IT infrastructure of an educational facility in potential jeopardy. (I would hope).

That’s not what I mean, it has one password that I set but I don’t want it like that. I want people to have to come to my site and become a member so they can access it. And it wouldn’t be doing anything to the “educational facility.”

i think clayton understood what you meant just fine.

I do.. and did when I read it initially.

If you want people to subscribe, why not just tell them : “subscribe and you get access”

whats the problem you have with that?

You should know that forcing people to to jump through hoops wont make them read jack — in other words, I can subscribe, get access to said proxy, and never visit your blog again. And IF you are talking about real subscriptions, like to feeds and what not, I can unsubscribe, and you wont ever know I did it.

In other words, Its a stupid idea (no offense).

I agree with whooami, the Idea is silly, and anyways, I don’t really believe (nor does anyone else) the explanation defiant91 has given.
The funny statement of “and it wouldn’t be doing anything to the “educational facility.” is the real tip-off to their true intent Colleges and Universities are NOT thrilled about allowing easy access to their sites.

its a high school, I can tell 😛

If the nickname is any evidence of the obvious, this individual is probably 17’ish. Heading back for Senior year? Maybe first year at college? My occupation puts me in the middle of a production environment where grown men (30’s, 40’s, 50’s), in a highly skilled technical field, regularly access several client pc’s (and the internet), in order to facilitate the use of web-based diagnostic repair tools and resources. I can tell you, it’s not an age related symptom. Almost all of them are college educated individuals with above average reasoning abilities. I recently spent a couple of weeks, WEEKS mind you, watching, intercepting, and blocking a long succession of proxy site URI’s that were being used to bypass our site filter. It was almost humorous at first. I would have one site blocked, another would show up, I would have that one blocked, a different one would pop up… and you could see and hear… that some individuals knew that we knew. Very cat and mouse like… except for the fact that the whole process becomes a load of bullshit, a waste of time, and a danger to resources after a while.

My point is, all of those sites they used as a proxy (I won’t name them here), were designed for, intentionally named for, and attractively aimed directly at kids of a high school age and mentality. So although the intentions and reasoning of “defiant91” may seem both flawed and of a potentially nefarious nature, I guess I can’t blame it on his (her) age.

I can say, that I would NOT want to be in the shoes of any campus administration when it comes to these types of problems. Especially when dealing with events that clearly turn out to be “file sharing” related issues. That’s a tough subject to find yourself taking a stand on these days.

    Peace, all…

    Lighten up boys.

    No problem…

By the way, how did you ever make out with the money you sent to that designer for the removal of encrypted footer contents that ripped you off through paypal? It surprised me that someone would come HERE to bitch about it like it actually had something to do with WordPress.

Wow! Guess you need to lighten up a little, huh?

Just a side note, but most of those can be broken and repaired in about 10 minutes by viewing the source code in a browser. At least you did the stand-up thing and tried to give the author their due. That’s an admirable quality in anyone. I hope you track the perpetrator straight to the scene of the crime. Your WALLET!!

Just funnin’ ‘ya a little, outthere. I hope you have a great weekend!!
