• I’ve had a serious outage (four days) with a supposedly reputable, recommended host. The WordPress installation is on a “virtual private server.”

All that comes up for me now is the Wp-Install screen. It states that “User(s) already exist” and does not provide the opportunity to enter a username. When I run the install “as is” it gives me the error message: Please provide a valid username.

I’ve deleted wp-config, renamed my .htaccess–kind of at my wits’ end as to how to proceed. I have a backup, several days old, of both the blog and the database.

Thanks to all who read this.

If you haven’t already done so please make a fresh backup the whole works now.

This is just in case something really goes wrong. It’s a great safety net.

It sounds like your tables are messed up (maybe) so try a repair first.

Thanks for getting back to me, Jan!!

After I made the original post, I dug in a little further and find that the database is in terrible shape–seems to be using a storage engine that is not recognized. I am unable to browse or do any fixing via MyAdmin. The system experienced a lot of hardware problems, including having its disk storage replaced, and it looks as though all did not go well in restoring the database.

I’ve already backed all this up, but it seems now my wisest course will be:

    1) Grab a couple of hours of sleep.
    2) Create a new database and restore it from an older backup
    3) Try pointing WordPress at that new database.
    4) Clean up any resulting mess.

I have a regular backup schedule–it’s just that none were taken while the server was down. I wish I had a clue as to when the corruption occurred!

    Thanks again!
