Username in Link Menu Item?

    Hello folks,

    This is probably a total newbie question but I’ve done all the keyword searches I can think of in the codex and can’t seem to find the info I’m looking for.

    I’m using WP 3.1 and am defining a custom menu. One of the menu items I want to add is a URL which substitutes in the current user name into the menu item’s URL. Is this possible?

    I’d seen short codes discussed I tried putting [username] into the URL of the menu item, but that didn’t seem to work. I’ve seen PHP snippets referring to $username so I tried that too, with no luck.

    An guidance or pointers appreciated.
