I was being told by Gravatar (signing up to GitHub) that WordPress was preventing me from using my username "philfrei".

How do I get access to my username? I had to log in using "philfrei1" to ask this question. I suspect I put in a bad email or something, and there does not seem to be a way to recover this name.

    Any advice?

  2. We're not Gravatar support here but I'll give it a try anyways... ;)

If someone else registered that account name then you're out of luck an will need to pick another one.

If that other account is yours and you have access to the registered email for that account then try the reset password page.

You can try https://en.gravatar.com/site/contact-us/ and see if that gets you an answer.

Thank you for replying. I'm sorry I wasn't clearer.

I believe I created a WordPress account with a faulty email. I used the suffix @aol.cm instead of @aol.com.

As a consequence, I cannot log into my preferred username "philfrei" and was forced to make a user name "philfrei1" in order to ask questions here.

How do I contact WordPress and have them delete this faulty account?

    Thank you!

Assuming this refers to an account here, we cannot remove any accounts I'm afraid. :-(

Can you edit the email to the correct email?

clearly, a change from .cm to .com should make sense, yes? I seriously doubt philfrei@aol.cm is a legal email.

Why does you service allow the creation of accounts with invalid emails, if the email is needed for accessing the account? That is a really questionable design, don't you agree?

For security reasons, not without a request from the old email address - which, in this case, is not going to happen.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

One last request: do you know where I can productively direct my complaint about of this user service deficit?

I mean, it is lazy programming, to not have an email verification step or an alternate path that remains viable until the email verification takes place.

It also leaves the service open to the thread of disruption by bots that sit there entering new accounts willy-nilly, stuffing the system with invalid user names.

No. I'm sorry but these are free community forums staffed by volunteers helping others in their spare time. WordPress is free software and there is no "user service" - deficient or otherwise.

Then by all means, please feel free to use another resource.
