   Hi, I need to hook something to a template page I have created. eg. http://www.abc.com/customer/?cust=1234

   I want to show it like http://www.abc.com/customer/james/

   How can I do it using .htaccess file of wordpress? please help.

   Normally WP handles Pretty URLs natively just fine. Are you using a plugin for the ?cust parameter?
