  • If you want to redirect the entire site, there are better methods than this plugin. It can be used to redirect some pages from the old site to the new one, but they must be on the same domain.

i.e., if the old site was somedoamin.com and you had a link http://somedomain.com/spiderman.html you could use the plugin to redirect to a new URL of http://somedomain.com/marvel-heroes/spiderman/ without any issues.

OR if you have the plugin on the old site (and it is WordPress) you could redirect from the old site to the new site as well, like http://somedomain.com/spiderman/ to http://someOTHERdomain.com/marvel-heros/spiderman/

OR if your old domain now redirects to the New domain, you could add redirects like /spiderman.html to /marvel-heroes/spiderman/ or /batman.html to /dc-heroes/batman/ etc.

That is about all you can really do. Redirecting the root of a domain to another site is best done at your domain registrar (or host) – redirect the Domain to the new Domain… then you can redirect fragment pages (ones that don’t have matching URL structure on the new site) to the correct URL on the new site.

Hope that makes sense – it is a little difficult to explain fully sometimes.

    Hey Don,

I appreciate all the info. Since you were so kind to give so much info, I will be a little more specific with what I am trying to do and I saw that you explained the registrar level may be the best fit.

I imported all of the content from the old site into the new site so that now the only URL difference between the two would be the root domain. The posts permalinks are identical.

I wish to redirect users from the old domain to the new one but have never done this before.

I will be working with cPanel or FTP if you have any knowledge you can throw at me.
