in relation to the free themes you can search for through wordpress. i am referring to the code above the footer and in the footer where the copyrighted link is. what can i edit and not edit?

If you want legal advice consult a lawyer.
Giving any kind of advice here would be dangerous. So if you think what you intend to do, having read the license, might be illegal, consult a lawyer.

Agree w/ peredur--for nitty gritty legal advice, lawyer up.
That said, I'm under the impression that themes in the free repository are required to use a GPL compatible license and must specify that license in the theme files. Check the theme's style.css file to see if the one you're looking at specifies a license URL with more information. That should give you an idea of what modifications are allowed.
