I'm a beginner. I want to upload a new theme. Everytime I do it I get a message saying, "stylesheet missing".
These are the steps I am taking.
Download zip file to my PC
    Open zip file
    Upload to server
use WP Dashboard to click on new theme

I sure could use some help. I've been stubbornly at this for hours and can't solve it myself.

    Check this:

Log into your server. For purposes to s**ts and giggles, we'll say the theme you want to activate is called "Work you piece of crap" (Yes, I'm in a mood today LOL)

Now, surf to where you want to upload your theme, and upload. Your directory tree should look like so:

    wordpress/wp-content/themes/work you piece of crap

now, click on the "work you piece of crap" folder. It *should* look like this inside of it:

    /images
    index.php
    sidebar.php
    styles.css
    etc., etc.

But tell me, are you seeing this, instead?

    /work you piece of crap

? If so, you've double-directoried your theme files. You need to open up the original folder and upload the subfolder.

    Make sense?

Thanks for your reply. NO...I do see all the files the way they should be...so they seem to upload properly...what confuses me is why there is a "style.css" file being uploaded to the server and yet I consistently get the message that "stylesheet is missing". Can you help me?

This is what it says under "Dashboard", "presentation"

The following themes are installed but incomplete. Themes must have a stylesheet and a template. Stylesheet is missing.

Okay, does the stylesheet have the necessary calls before it then? There should be a commentted out section at the beginning of the file:

    <?php
    /*
    Theme Name:...

If that's not there, it won't work.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I was away from my PC for a while. NO...it doesn't have that BEFORE /* Theme name etc.
Do I just go ahead and add it to the file, resave it, re-upload etc.
By the way...all themes that I have tried from "Themes.wordpress.net" are all showing the same problem...am I missing out a crucial step somewhere? Seems wierd that this bit of html code would be missing from every theme I try to upload...thanks, sure appreciate you trying to help me!

Just look in your default theme folder at that stylesheet. You'll see the code that's needed. Just copy it, paste it into the new theme and it and edit it to fit the theme you want to use.

Dearest doodlebee, I've looked at the code in the default and it is exactly the same...nothing added before it, starts with/*
THere must be something wrong in the way I am doing this, so here is the sequence of steps I am taking.
    1. download to PC (2) extract files using windows extract compressed files wizard (3) use FTP to upload folder to server (4) send files to public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/http://www.gizelleriver.com/wordpress/wp-content/themes
That is where I upload the new theme to.
Any more ideas of how to resolve this? I sure appreciate your help! g

    public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/http://www.gizelleriver.com/wordpress/wp-content/themes

    THAT looks totally screwed up.

You should be uploading it to

    public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/

    OR

    http://www.gizelleriver.com/wordpress/wp-content/themes/

Why you have that set up the way you do is way beyond me.

I'm looking at that URL: (http://www.gizelleriver.com/wordpress/) and I don't even see wordpress set up in your system at all - I'm getting a 404.

    Hey doodlebee!
I know the file path seems really screwed up. I tried to get my server people to change it but they won't. Anyway, after all this, I found a way to upload a theme...and it all worked out. I found a theme with a stylesheet file style.css.php, uploaded it separately to the server on that filepath and lo and behold, I had a theme ready to go. I don't quite understand why it worked but at least I have achieved my goal.
And I want to say a big thank-you to you for your efforts to help me. I really appreciated it. Thanks, gizelle
