    I’m using WordPress and Buddypress, when a user Create’s a Blog and follows the link from the site to their created blog they get the following error;

    Error establishing a database connection

I am using WordPress 3.1.3 and latest Buddypress 1.2.8, with PHP 5.3.6

    Any ideas?

Also I have all the correct files in the /themes/bp-social/blogs/ directory (index.php, create.php, blogs-loop.php) however nothing shows in the Blogs listings? Whats going on?

By the way I get the same problem even if I use the default BuddyPress theme.

Do share whether you get the same problem if creating a subsite from the backend as Super Admin.

I got the same problem when creating the blog as Super Admin as well. Any ideas?

  4. It means the site is not getting created in the database. Did you look in there to verify if it was or not?

I checked the database and the url is displayed satisfactory (http://uknexttopmodel.com/dagwan), however the appropriate directory hasn't been created within the wordpress directory structure on the site itself. Also if I create the folder artificially all that I get is 'Access Denied'. So what gives?

  6. however the appropriate directory hasn't been created within the wordpress directory structure on the site itself.

It will never be created - it doesn't need one. The blogs are *virtual*.

Remove the folder you made. It won't help.

I checked the database and the url is displayed satisfactory

But did it make all the extra blog tables for that blog? there should be 9 new tables for every single blog, each with a number in them like wp_27_posts etc..

I removed the directory as soon as I saw it had no affect. Where do I look for the new tables, the database doesn't appear to contain any new tables referring to the */dagwan blog.

Thanks again by the way, your help is greatly appreciated.

  8. Then that's the problem - your db is not letting you add all the new tables, so new blog throw that error.

your db user needs ALL permissions on the db. If you're not sure how to do that, ask your host.

The db user is the db admin. wp_blogs shows both

    uknexttopmodel.com /
    uknexttopmodel.com / dagwan

    However wp_bp_userblogs only shows

    id user_id blog_id
    1 1 1

which I assume refers to the root uknexttopmodel.com (unless that would be categorised as the main and only the new uknexttopmodel.com/dagwan site would be registered in this table).

    Any suggestions?

If you want I can create a logon id for my server and you have a look around yourself?

  10. No, I can;t go login to your install.

Look in network admin -> Sites. What the blog ID of your other sites? Hover over the names to get it in the browser bar at the bottom of the screen.

Now go LOOK at the db tables. Not *IN* the tables - the tables themselves. You need to have wp_post wp_options and all the rest for EVERY blog.

so you'll have wp_2_posts, wp_3_posts etc.. a whole pile of em.

If you do not (and I suspect you do not) THAT is the problem which I've already stated.

Go ask your host why your db user does not have permission to create new TABLES.

Thanks. I escalated the dbuser to have all ALL PRIVILEDGES using the included PHPMyAdmin 3.3.3 (under Database Servers -> WebAdmin) on Plesk Control Panel 10.2. Still same problem. If I create the sub-site using Super Admin or normal user, same problem, when you try to visit the site it comes back Error connecting to database. The only thing different is that when you check the dbase you can see that the only additional new tables created are for the photo gallery plugin, wp_5_ngg*** etc etc.

    :(

  12. Then you'll still have to get with your host to see why it's not creating the new blogs tables.

Again, blogs get the db error message when WP can't find the blog tables in the db.

Thanks for the assist. Its looking more and more likely that I'm going to be switching to Joomla and JomSocial! Lolz!

  14. It's still an issue with your server, not WP. :)

  15. And it may cause problems in Joomla and JomSocial, just from my experience.

Well, I elevated the dbuser to ALL PRIVILEDGES using phpMyAdmin on my server (running dedicated server) and still the same problem. I mean this isn't the only problem with the WP/BP system either, there is also the problem of the /blogs directory page just showing a blank page despite the all the appropriate files being the appropriate folder.

(Also I have all the correct files in the /themes/bp-social/blogs/ directory (index.php, create.php, blogs-loop.php) however nothing shows in the Blogs listings? Whats going on?)

  17. We're ignoring the BP aspect of things for now for the larger issue of 'no tables being created.'

IMO, they're probably caused by the same thing.

Can you log into the database AS the same user you use in the wp_config.php file? If so, while logged into PHPmyadmin (or whatever), can you THEN create tables?

Maybe you don't have php permissions set up right, though that would be odd... I've not seen a restriction where you can make entries but not tables.

  18. there is also the problem of the /blogs directory page just showing a blank page

So go read your error logs. You've got multiple issues here now. Tho I woudl suspect that if you don't have blogs actually being created, ten yeah the blog directory will crap out on you.

Well, I elevated the dbuser to ALL PRIVILEDGES using phpMyAdmin on my server (running dedicated server) and still the same problem.

But have you asked your host if they've restricted table creation for db users in any way? We have had a couple people find this out. Which is why I'm asking.

Seriously, at this point there's nothing else we can do to help until you get over that hurdle and you host is the best place to ask.

Where are you hosted? Did you manually install WordPress - FTP/cpanel/etc. or did you use the webhost script to one-click/auto-install WP? If you did the one-click install, then I suggest you start from scratch and drop DB tables and install WP manually.

I installed using the crap 1-Click installation from Plesk Control Panel 10.2 running on a dedicated server from 1and1 running CentOS 5 with PHP 5.3. I have contacted 1and1 concerning the problem and they're raising a ticket with Plesk now.

As regards the WordPress, I tried doing a manual install and I get a very strange problem. It loops. After I've entered the appropriate information into it for usernames and dbases etc it says lets begin installation, but when you press the Begin Installation button it just loops back to the start saying no config.php file is present etc. So I manually created the config.php file based on the config-sample.php file with the correct usernames and dbase details. After doing that I get an error message saying that no config-sample.php file is available.

As regards the dbase problem, I went into phpMyAdmin and changed the dbuser to have all priviledges to the specific dbase its meant to be controlling and still no joy, unfortunately.

HELP! Lolz! I'm losing hair at a rapid rate - lolz!

Also are there any plugins people can recommend which allow me to restrict how many images people can upload based on membership level or group?

  22. plesk and 1and1? We see reports of issues with that host all the time here.

and no, i know of no plugn to restrict uploads based on membership level.

I tried their test subsite and yes it worked fine - until I reactivated the WordPress Network. All Plesk had done was reset all the passwords :( and remove networking ability from WordPress. As soon as the networking was reinitialised their test subsite (and the new one I created as an additional test) all came back wit the Error establishing a database connection problem.

I just don't know what next. I've reported it for reassessment by Plesk but I'm now considering dumping this dedicated server and getting a different one from a different company - big problem for all the 28 live sites I host though! :(

  26. IF I had a host reset my stuff like that and dump my network, I'd be gone already.

I'm seriously considering a switch to Joomla and JomSocial as it operates its social networking side of things so much more differently....by the way 1and1 confirmed that their dedicated servers support wildcard domains, so will be testing that once Plesk have got back to me.

  28. But none of that addresses the issue of the db not creating new tables.

Did you use Fantastico or another script to install wordpress? Because that would mess it up.

Wonder what happened in this thread. I"m having the same problem. Everything was working fine up until a couple of days ago I use Cpanel not Plesk and then suddenly getting the same errors as reported in this thread. The sites do not show up in the blogs.dir so not sure what's gong on. I host with Host Gator in a shared environment so it's all quite odd. I can create the site from super admin dashboard no problem but then the 'error establishing database connection' when trying to browse the site.
