I’m up and running. I chose Bluehost as my web host, paid the bill, registered my url, installed WordPress and got my blog going with text and images. Very intuitive, simple, I’m delighted.

And so to video. I want to post a video, password protected in order that only the actress involved might view it, for now. I render off the video using Vegas Pro 8 in Sony AVC format (mp4) and the finished video is 20 mg.

I go to WordPress dashboard and attempt to upload the file using the flash uploader. WordPress tells me ‘This file is too big. The maximum upload size for your server is 8M’.

So I pop the question at the Bluehost forum and a moderator tells me:

    1. update the php.ini file tyo allow for larger files to be uploaded or
    2. use an FTP program to upload the file instead of the HTTP upload facility within WordPress since there is no file size limit for FTP.

I have no idea what a php.ini file is so I go with the FTP suggestion. I transferred the file using ftp to Bluehost and placed it in www/wp-content/uploads/2010/04 with the other media I’ve uploaded (using WordPress). I confirm its presence using File Manager. Perfect, I think.

Then I load WordPress and look in the media folder and…not there. I can’t see the file, an MP4 file, from within WordPress so I’m missing something, clearly.

I presume this is a WordPress question rather than a Bluehost questions.

How to get my mp4 video file into a post?

Many thanks, and please pardon my ignorance, but I’m learning, and WordPress seems like a great piece of software..

I think since you didn’t upload through WordPress the file doesn’t exist in the WordPress database and thus will not be present in the media library.

You should also look at a player plug-in as well since the uploader will not actually encapsulate the video but just post a link.

    JW player is pretty good.

You can also upload the video at YouTube

Or Kaltura, they have a free 10 gb account

Thanks, PBP_Editor, progress. So now I’m back to square one, I think, and the question becomes what is the best way to post videos in my WordPress blog? I take it there is no direct way (without having a PhD in coding) to upload the video file itself to WordPress and post on my blog, or am I really missing something?

In my simplistic mind it seems I need a server where the actual file resides (right now the file is on Bluehost, my internet host), software to enable playing the file, and a link in WordPress to the software/file. Videopress, Cincopa and Kaltura appear to be offering a complete service/product that does it. Is that correct, and if so, which to go with? Is one of these products the way to go?

    Many thanks

Definitely the easiest thing is to use Kaltura. Hosting your own video isn’t the best approach anyway since the performance probably won’t be so good on Bluehost and companies like Kaltura have built sophisticated video delivery protocols that ensure smooth playback.

But installing the JW player plugin isn’t out of the question
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-jw-player/

This won’t take too long and gives you full control of your video.

It’s really up to you. Good luck.

OK, I shall give Kaltura a whirl. Many thanks again; much appreciated.

I have installed the Kaltura all-in-one plugin, uploaded a couple of vids, all went rather smoothly, sweet in fact, but now it seems to be turning sour.

The first irritation is the Kaltura watermark in the player. As soon as I saw that I removed the vids, immediately. No way will my little vids be smothered in Kaltura (or any other such branded player) rubbish. Now, maybe I missed a ‘click here to remove the Kaltura thing’ in the player configuration box, and if I did I apologise and ask anyone to please set me straight.

So I have signed up for the FREE trial. That tells me that at the end of the trial period I start to pay. I have wasted far too much time searching for information regarding pricing, to no avail. That smells a bit fishy to me. I still have no idea what the damage might be. I find that quite annoying. What can Kaltura be thinking?

I have opened a ticket at Kaltura but I have no idea when, or if, they will get back to me. In the meantime I thought I might pose my questions/concerns here.

And if Kaltura turns out to be as annoying as it currently appears to be my next question is what are the alternative products that do rather much the same thing, WordPress compatible of course?

I do hope I got this all wrong and I am simply having a very senior moment.

    Cheers and Thanks.

Well, wouldn’t you know it; Kaltura got back to me just after I posted this above and yes, the watermark is no longer an issue; removed in the Studio.

Pricing is based on my needs, it seems, and I need to talk to sales. So I’m feeling better about Kaltura.

    More later.
