I just uploaded a single picture using the wordpress upload button on the post edit page.
But why are 11 files created on the server? 10 resized versions.
I understand why 1 resize is needed, for the post thumbnail. But why the rest? Can I change this?

WordPress has different image size requires not only 1. Also the theme can add the resize image it need.
You can change it but it's better not to do this.
