Uploads should go into wp-content/uploads
, or if you have year and month uploads set, then wp-content/uploads/CURRENT_YEAR/CURRENT_MONTH
..
..where CURRENT_YEAR
is the current year, so currently 2010..
..and CURRENT_MONTH
is the current month..
FTP’ed uploads won’t appear in your media library (it doesn’t work like that), however there is an option for adding FTP’ed files to the media library…
See.

Thanks for the help. I may get the plug-in so the files show up in my media library. But just so I can learn… if I don’t get that plug-in, and upload the files to the uploads folder, how will I find them and get them into my website? I had already actually loaded the files to that folder, figuring that made the most sense, but then couldn’t find them when I logged in to my dashboard. Sorry for my total ignorance… I am just learning how to build a website and completely starting from scratch in terms of know-how. I am really enjoying WordPress, though, and really appreciate the help!
As i said previously, WordPress does not work in that manner, items uploaded via FTP do not appear in the media library.. however the plugin i linked to allows you to add “FTP’ed” files into the library, alleviating that problem… 😉
