• Hi,

I’m just wondering, after I go to the WordPress theme directory and choose a theme, how do I upload it into my blog?

At the bottom of the “Themes” page it says:
“You can find additional themes for your site in the WordPress theme directory. To install a theme you generally just need to upload the theme folder into your wp-content/themes directory. Once a theme is uploaded, you should see it on this page.”

…but I’m not sure how to upload this theme folder into my wp-content/theme directory. The blog was initially installed by a friend and is using a host they have access to – I just have the password. Am I still going to be able to install a theme by just being logged in to my blog?

    Thanks

    Thanks for the response.

So generally, in order to make any changes to the blog, upload plug-ins, etc, am I going to have to access the host account?

If so, what’s the best way for me to have a custome blog without having to know all about FPT and the more technical side of things?

I’d really prefer not to use a free account as I want to have some control over customization, but am not so technically skilled.

    Thanks.

I’d really prefer not to use a free account as I want to have some control over customization, but …

there are 3 ways to have that.

    1. use an ftp client

    2. access files, and possibly uploading capabilities) from within the host’s cpanel access or similar (plesk, vdeck, hsphere, etc)

    3. IF the permissions are conducive, edit the current them files from within the file editor.

Uploading plugins and themes will require either #1 or #2.

Okay and is it possible to get a free ftp client? or is this something you need to pay for on a regular basis like hosting?

The big problem is that I cannot actually log into the host account where my blog is hosted – it’s the friend’s hosting account, he just uploaded the wordpress files into it.

    this is googlable.

then why are you worrying about an ftp client?

Its very simple — you either have access or you dont.

If you dont, you deal with what you have, or you get your own domain, and do it yourself, or you go get a wordpress.com blog.

    Thanks for that link.

Yah, I might just have to go wtih the free account. Initially I didn’t realize I’d have to have access to all the behind the scenes stuff; I thought once it was uploaded I could add templates, etc, myself.

I have my own domain name, it was just the process of uploading the wordpress I didn’t know how to do – hence I had someone else do it.

There is a way to upload themes without using an FTP client. I had the plugin about a month ago…worked well for uploading a few templates at a time. I’ll see if I can find it.

You can check out some of my video tutorials to get you started. However….these were written assuming you have ftp access. But they will help nonetheless.

uh and how do you get the plugin onto the site? duh. πŸ˜› you do it using one of the ways I have already outlined.

lol…..right you are love. However, she said her friend uploaded the wordpress files. Why not make it easy on her and assume that he would install a simple plugin for her. As with my clients they don’t have a lot of time to learn all there is to know about wordpress. Maybe I assume too much πŸ˜‰

    Cheers.

Why not make it easy on her and assume that he would install a simple ..

because she hasn’t come close to suggesting thats the case, and if he/she can do that, than he/she can upload themes for her as well.

haha….touchy touchy. Someone needs some sleep.

Im at work — I dont need sleep. I just think this is a silly thread πŸ˜› Like i said, she either has the access she needs or she doesnt.

if it were me, I would just ask the friend to hook me up with the login/passwd and be done with it πŸ™‚

Yah, I was just reading some stuff about plug-ins and I’m still going to have to access the host. I’m going to see if I can just get the password, and if not, I may need to host it myself or something.

yes! “hook me up bro” .. that always works for me

Shannon – If you like, I can set you up through my server. No charge…..we have everything that anybody could need when it comes to wordpress. My good deed for the day!

    Let me know either way.
