• I’ve looked for solutions all over for this but nothing’s helping in my case!

I’ve got two WordPress installs on the same server, both same version and both using exactly the same plugins. On one of the sites I’m able to upload items to the Media Library and WordPress returns the correct file size and dimensions etc. but I get 404 errors every time I try to preview them from media library or access them through the front end as a regular user would. In the case of image files, the preview image is also broken in the main library list. However if I edit a file from the library it is shown just fine!

The oddest thing is that the second site works just fine. I’ve compared file permissions and ownership and htaccess files and there are absolutely no differences between the two. I’ve even tried redirecting the problem site’s upload path to that of the working site and still had the same problem!

I’d appreciate any suggestions for anything else that might be causing this issue as I’m pretty stumped now. It should just work!

Some further musings. I’ve managed to get the not working site to work by substituting the store and URL paths in media settings for those used on the working site (didn’t seem to work before – user error I guess). So now everything is uploaded to the working site’s store directory and the direct URL of items hangs off the working site’s domain name.

It works but obviously it’s a bit of a bodge I’d rather fix.

Btw as you might have worked out I’m using my own path for media storage rather than the WordPress default.
