Upload large files that are Downloadable Products

Hello all,

I am looking to sell stock photography and some graphic files on my site that are upwards of 150mb – 500mb in file size as downloadable products.

However, I am having an issue where the media library uploader is not completing the upload and just leaves the file stuck on upload at what looks like less than a quarter of the way into the upload (http://i.imgur.com/ToJWfbk.png). Can anyone help sort me out and get me in the right direction so things are able to upload at large file sizes.

I have changed my upload limit to be 250mb for each file and changed my max timeout time as well in php. I have been told to upgrade to a bigger server, add more ram and more cores as well as to increase my tmp folder size. But I’m not sure where to start and question whether these are the right path to go down for a problem that may have an alternative solution. Any feedback is appreciated.
