I just started building my site with WordPress.org, and had activated the Akismet 2.3.0 plug-in with no trouble, including adding the API key. Then when I went back to my plug-in page, I attempted to upgrade to 2.4.0 and got this error:

    Could not create directory. D:/hosting/6786310/html/wp-content/plugins/akismet/

    Plugin install failed.

Now Akismet is completely gone from my plug-in page; apparently 2.3.0 got wiped, but I can’t install 2.4.0. I saw where I can download 2.3.0 from the Plug-In Directory, but I wouldn’t have any idea what to do with it from there; the reason I’m using WordPress in the first place is because of my non-existent coding knowledge. Any advice would be much appreciated!

  • Download the Akismet plugin to your computer. Unpack the archive & extract the askismet folder and upload it to wp-content/plugins using FTP into your site (or whatever file management application your host provides).

Thanks for your help, esmi! That probably should have worked but for some reason didn’t (very possibly operator error). However, going into my file directory, I found the akismet folder in a temp file in an upgrade folder and was able to move it to the plugin folder, and the plugin now shows. Thanks again!
