  • Naive questions but to what host does the screen refer that asks for your hostname, user name and password =
Is it the host on which the word press files are stored? or
Is it the path at wordpress etc?

  • it wants your ftp credentials
as if you were uploading files to the site

Thanks for responding. I have asked my host provider for those details and we have between ourselved tried 3 different hostname combinations without success. Two issues occur
    i) message connection details required and
ii) the hostname field can not be cleared to enter a new host entry (I note that other unresolved posts also have experienced this issue).

Any advice as to what to do?

Yes, I have the same problem. (…see post below)
I have searched all the pertinent files in WP (… all upgrade and update php files as well as register and login and config), and completely searched through my database and cannot find where this hostname field is stored so that I can clear it. It seems as though the script for the form fields has locked on to this and cannot be cleared.
I am baffled as to what to do next.

My host service has installed 2.7.1 for me and it works (well the side bar has disappeared but I seem to recall that is the subject of other posts which I shall look up).

I will leave the post unresolved for awhile in case a response to this problem is received and will let you know.

I have tried the upgrade from 2.7.0 to 2.7.1 twice. Each time it fails.

I get no messages on the dashboard screen after I start the upgrade and enter the PW for the web host.

Looking at the wordpress directory on the server, I see a lot of stuff under wordpress/upgrade but when I look at the dashboard it just says that the update failed, try again. When I did that after the first failure, it just churned for at least an hour.

    What now?

    Previously I posted:

The only active plugin is membersonly. I don’t even have the auto update plugin on the system.

Solved the “hostname field can not be cleared to enter a new host entry” problem.

    – from your cPanel, go into your database from the phpAdmin link.
    – select wp-options in your database
    – look for ftp credentials, and when you find it, select the EDIT option (…it looks like a pencil)
    – correct the error in your hostname, then click the GO button at the bottom of the screen, not the first one
    – exit your database

I corrected the errors on one of the sites I admisiter and a couple of friend’s sites as well this way.
If you are still having problems, e-mail me.
