Upgrading to 2.7, duplicate terms created from categories

    I’ve inherited an older version of WP (2.0.2) and am testing the upgrade to 2.7.1. During the upgrade I receive database errors that duplicate entries were created in the wp_terms table. From the initial research I’ve done, that appears to be caused by duplicate category_nicenames in the wp_categories table which are ported over to wp_terms before wp_categories is dropped.. This results in certain posts having the wrong categories attached.

    Has anyone run into this and is there a method of getting the two tables synched up appropriately so that this doesn’t happen?

    It is beginning to look like someone tried to upgrade this database to 2.3 and stopped/failed — I’m finding version 2.3 files and the database is still 2.0. Changing this to resolved.
