I recently tried to upgrade from 2.3 to 2.5.1 and the upgrade file did not work. It just showed as blank. I decided to take a different route. There was a lot of extra stuff on the server and riddled through out so I wanted to just start fresh with new plugins, files, and everything.

My question is geared more toward the database. Can I just transfer the user information from one database to the other by copying it straight over? I know that they are structured differently, but I’m wondering if I can just copy and paste the un/pw and be ok. I don’t know if the password encryption has changed and I don’t really see anything telling me how they are stored. I notice that there is a secret sentence in the config file now and I don’t know if it uses that or not.

There’s a question in there somewhere. Any direction?

I wouldn’t. Here’s what I recommend. Go ahead and kill these folders:

    /wp-admin
    /wp-includes
All the *.php files in the WP root EXCEPT wp-config.php

DO NOT DELETE these if they exist:
    .htaccess
    robots.txt

Once the server’s been wiped clean, rename your /plugins folder (so WP will think the plugins have been disabled), then upload fresh 2.5.1 files from the distro. Next, perform the upgrade and let WP upgrade the database for you. Finally, rename your /plugins folder.

And of course export a *.sql dump of your WP database before doing any of this. 🙂

One more thing, I know you are frustrated and impatient, but bumping topics actually has the reverse effect. I generally look for unanswered posts first. So I didn’t see this until I was somewhere else in the forum. Keep your lone post there for at least 24-48 hours to give folks a chance to respond to it.
