Upgrading from WP 2.2.1 -- will it all break? (6 posts)

    Hello,
I want to upgrade my WordPress version from 2.2.1 and I'm afraid I'll lose the mods I made to my template.

I've been quietly and happily using WordPress since 2007, using the Modern (designed by Ulf Pettersson) template. I modified this to get the colors and setup I wanted. I'm no programmer/developer, so this was a largely trial and error process, but it all works. I'm not using many plugins (the desire to use more is the reason I am looking to update). Am I correct that I will lose the modifications I made to the Modern template when I upgrade?

I'm in the process of backing everything up. Is this the correct process:
    1. Back up the site.
    2. Turn off plug-ins.
    3. Update WP
    4. Upload old versions of modified templates.
    5. Turn on plug-ins, and update them as necessary.

Thanks in advance, and if there is another thread dealing with this, please point me to it. My site is http://www.synchrolux.com

After some searching around, it looks like I need to upgrade manually in small steps. That is, upgrade to 2.3, then 2.6, then 2.7. I'm not sure how small the steps need to be after that, but later tonight I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

    Kevin, may I make a suggestion ?

If (that is to say : IF) you are familiar with the process of making backups, of BOTH your database and files, then you can try to directly update to the latest wordpress version, and see if it works.

If it fails one way or another, no worries, you can restore your backup, and no harm done, at least you won't regret spending couples of hours on the following tasks.

If you're afraid that your FTP reupload may take forever, free hint : reupload everything in advance to a subfolder at the root of your hosting account, and when the time for restoring comes, delete the new but not working stuff, and move the old stuff back into place, it's much faster.)

(To handle the database backups (creation, downloading to disk for safety, restoring), rather than phpmyadmin, I always recommend the great wp-dbmanager wordpress plugin.)

Also cf the bible, even if I find this page so stuffed with info it's confusing, and it ought to mention the wp-dbmanager plugin making everything so easier and faster :

    Try 2.2.1 -> 2.3 -> 2.5 -> 2.7 -> 2.8 -> 2.9 -> 3.0 -> 3.2.1

Thank you both! Love the tip about reuploading in advance into a subfolder. I'll also check out wp-dbmanager. I'll wait until late tonight to try all this, since I need to keep my site up and working during business hours.

Done, and it all seems to be working. I went ahead and did each step manually, since each step didn't take all that long. Thanks for the help!
