Upgrading from WordPress 2.5

Hi all, inexperienced wordpress user here.

I have a site that is currently version 2.5. I have always been too nervous to upgrade. I just install using fantastico and there has always been the option to upgrade there in fantastico, but I haven’t been game to try it.

But I read a lot about peoples sites being hacked and really think I should try.

What issues do I have, or potential problems, and how should I go about doing it?

Because you have left it so long to upgrade and are now using a relatively old version of WordPress, it would be advisable to upgrade via a series of smaller steps (ie 2.5 -> 2.6 -> 2.7 -> 2.8) than to attempt a single upgrade of that size. I’m not sure how/if Fantastico manages this.

You’re likely to find that some plugins will no longer work and your theme may also be incompatible with 2.8. On the plus side, your site will be a lot more secure.

Hmm, excellent point about the theme, I hadn’t even thought of that.

Fantastico doesn’t offer any option of upgrading bit by bit, is there somewhere I can find instructions on how to do that manually?

Think I’d be tempted to backup, backup, backup and then go for broke – straight to 2.8.6. If it went drastically wrong, restore then do the incremental option. But probably best to bow to esmi’s WordPress greatness there. Way more experienced with WP than me.

Backup, re-write new code to old code. It’ll working . I do it for mu site Katseo – Seo Tips , Seo Blog and it work 🙂
