Upgrade to 2.7 = can't login (13 posts)

I've seen several other posts like this and none of them, apparently, has been resolved.

I upgraded my subs to 2.7 with no problems. Except for a white screen problem which I fixed ... plugins issue.

Feeling heady from success, I upgraded my main site. Looks gorgeous, can't login.

I deleted the plugins folder. Still couldn't login. Reuploaded it.

Cleared cache and cookies. No go.

    Renamed plugins folder. Nothing.

I'm not good with code, and besides, I don't see why I should correct the code that should have been right in the first place. This has been an ongoing problem with each upgrade, and you'd think it'd be fixed by now.

This is the same scenario with Flock, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or any of the other obscure browsers I have for checking.

If this is ever fixed, I hink I'll just stay ut until someone says that there's no login problem with the latest upgrade.

I upgraded to 2.7 the first day and my blog worked fine until Jan 1. The main website still works fine. All I get is the referrer information.

I restored my database from a backup taken Dec 31. It still did not work. Thinking I might have been hacked, I backed up my installation to my local hard disk, completely blew away the WordPress directory, and uploaded the WordPress 2.7 code from a newly downloaded image.

Still no luck. In fact, I can't even run the /wp-admin/install.php script. This has been going on for three days now.

I'm also in the same boat. I've tried replacing all the files, reverting to an old database and checking file permissions .. all with no luck.

I've been running 2.7 on my main site for several weeks now, so I can't understand why its happening now.

Yesterday I upgraded my forum software to SMF 2 beta, and I have been using the SMF_WP plugin to tie in the WordPress and forum logins.

Is there a way to disable a plugin without being able login to the dashboard?

What I did to deactivate the plugins was to copy the folder from ftp on my hard drive and replace it with the generic folder from the wp-contents folder in wp 2.7. I had done this when I realized that one of my sub-sites wasn't working properly because I had forgotten to deactivate the plugins and after upgrading, the whole site literally vanished.

After finding the information on this forum (bad plugin can cause fatal error and display only white pages), I did the above and the site now displays perfectly. And I can also sign into all of my subsites, but not my main one.

I followed the directions exactly, and it's frustrating to see so many of us with the same problem and dealing with the Silence of the Moderators.

WP has been suspiciously absent during all of these particular posts. I checked all the posts and threads related to this issue and haven't seen any solid, consistent resolution that also didn't involve writing or rewriting code. I'm not comfortable coding and think that there should be a better solution.

It helps to keep in mind that moderators are not help-desk people...they moderate the forums. Of course, they often provide help as well, but their main function is to ensure the forums run smoothly, rules are followed, spam is taken care of, etc.

I have seen a lot of posts about this problem, but there has also been a lot of help provided as well...it's very difficult to tell someone why they are seeing a blank screen or why they can't login...those a very generic problems with a variety of causes.

I understand that. The white screen problem I solved with a little bit of legwork and cussing. But now that it's done, I have no issues with that. That obviously was something that I did that needed to be corrected.

But this seems so universal. And because it happens every single time there's an upgrade, I'm concerned that there's something that's being missed. And this is the first time that this has happened where there doesn't seem to be any help from anyone or a solution that helps a lot of people. It seems almost unsolvable, especially when people are going back to their previous backups and *still* can't log in.

I believe, and I stress believe because I don't know for sure, that most of these problems have to do with things other than WordPress. I believe a lot of it has to do with incomplete, or incorrect upgrades for various reasons, such as:

    - Forgetting to disable plugins before upgrade
    - Trying to make too big of a jump -- 2.0 to 2.7 for example
    - Connection timeouts during upgrade--common on some shared hosts
    - Incompatible themes and plugins
    - Overwriting source code instead of removing and replacing source code during an upgrade. I know a lot of people advocate the overwriting approach, but this can cause a lot of problems when old files are left behind...which can often happen for a variety of reasons.
    - and, when trying to revert to a previous backup, simply not doing it properly

I'm not claiming to be the worlds-expert at upgrading wp, but I've done it literally hundreds of times over the years and have never had this problem...but, I don't use auto-installers and upgraders. I install and upgrade manually and will continue to do so, even though 2.7 has the built in upgrade feature.

I did my secondary sites manually and they all worked. (except for the glitch with the blank screen which was quickly remedied). So why would it be different for one site than another? I wish I knew. I was very methodical when I upgraded, especially since I had "practiced" on my other sites. None of my other sites have had any issues.

All of the things you mentioned above - I did. Step by step.
    I disabled plugins
    I went from 2.6.5
    No timeouts
Theme is not an issue. It still looks good.
Haven't tried to revert to backup
Followed the directions exactly, including avoid overwriting certain files and replacing others

The only thing I need to do is to be able to log in. Any of the other problems that you mention I feel are mostly fixable, or can at the very least, be worked around one way or another. I've done that in the past, and I don't have a problem with that so long as I can log in and post.

All I want to do is log in.

If you can't login, then try resetting your admin password.

I found something that I can't seem to fix that may be related to this:

I try to log in at http://vegaswineaux.com/wp-admin. I type in the username and password, but this is what appears:

    http://www.vegaswineaux.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fvegaswineaux.com%2Fwp-admin%2F

What's the www about? Even if I delete it, it still comes up. I notice that does not happen with my other sites, which allow me to log in normally and they do not display the www. Is there any cure?

Even after completing rebooting the computer, as well as clearing cache, cookies, and history, it still happens. Any suggestions?
