I'm not using apache, IIS, so there is no .htaccess. Basically, If i set the permalink to default, works fine. If i put "tag" or "category" in the respective fields on the permalinks page, works fine, if i just any other structure, without filling in the category or tag field at bottom, it breaks, 404. Tried to seacch here, didn't want to be the moron who missed the obvious, but can't find anyone having same issue without .htaccess. Not trying to do pretty permalinks or anything, just the regular old /index.php/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

deactivated all my plugs just in case

    any help would rock

I am also having the same problem.

    I also never used htaccess.

    I am however, using Lighttpd.

my permalink structure was also /index.php/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/

I am now using the default http://www.domain.com/?p=123

    someone please help?

Here is the very best solution I've ever seen for this problem, and it avoids rewrite rules altogether. In fact, I wish the wordpress devs would document that and perhaps inject a 404 template whenever themes don't supply one.
