• Hi

I just upgraded from 2.1 to WP 2.3.2 and I have loads of problems.

    – My categories are gone
    – My pages are gone

And WP is behaving weird with permalinks too.

Is there any help out there?

I do have a backup of my database.

I did upgrade disabling all my plugins and deleting files from the server before copying the new ones.

    Thanks
    Ingrid

  • Good morning. I’m having problems making the 2.1 to 2.3.2 upgrade as well. Man am I glad I backed up and copied files! My blog has been offline since yesterday morning.

I typed in a URL to run the WordPress upgrade program URL and it’s giving me an error screen saying “Error establishing a database connection.” I’ve gone to a couple of different and more detailed upgrade screens to see what I may have missed or what I may have forgotten to delete and I deleted a few more things to get to this point.

Initially I was getting some other type of message saying to rename the wp-config-sample.php file to wp-config.php and that has at least gotten me to this point.

When I try to go to my blog here’s the error message it shows:
    Forbidden

“You don’t have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Apache/1.3.33 Server at http://www.martyblogs.com Port 80″

What should I try next? Or should I reinstall version 2.1 and try the upgrade process all over again?

    Thanks,
    Martin

Marty – you need to update the wp-config.php file with your db server info. Sounds like that is your problem.

Ingrid (Marty – exactly what Ingrid said ;-),

There have been a few people that are talking about the same issue. I’ve updated/downgraded/re-upgraded my test blog and cannot replicate this issue, although I found out it renamed one of my categories…

Did you get any errors after upgrading WP?
Which version did you upgrade from?
What type of server are you running?

    Hello

    I upgraded from 2.1 to 2.3.2.

    My webserver is running Linux.

I did get some errors, one of them saying “wp_categories” not found.

I do have a backup of my db.

My permalink problem is due to Pages no longer being Pages. they somehow have changed into regular posts. As I didn’t have that many, I manually changed that back, so that problem is solved.

The biggest issue I have now is:

    all my categories are gone
and the links between posts and categories are therefor gone too.

Let me know if you need more info. πŸ™‚

(I have never before had any upgrade problems, have been running WP for a long time!)

I’m in the process of restoring a 2.1 DB and I’m going to upgrade that to see whats going on. From what I understand, from reading over the various tickets, there was a DB change somewhere in the 2.2 structure…

As long as you have that backup, all should be ok… Let me do a little more research and I’ll get back to you. I’m going to jump from 2.1 to 2.3 and if I can replicate, try ratcheting up from 2.1 to 2.2 to 2.3 and see what happens.

    Thanks Justin!

Really odd. After restoring a 2.1.2 DB, I expected some problems and got a few errors, but it worked… None of my categories renamed, none disappeared – completely unexpected from seeing all the problems. I even kept the plugins on to try to break things.

I’m going to say try restoring your backup and try re-upgrading and see what happens.

Wish I could offer more than that, but between 2 servers (XAMP on Windows & a Linux Box), neither can duplicate the issue.

    OK, thanks for trying anyway.

I will manually import my Categories I think. As the rest is running OK, and I don’t want to risk running into more problems.

Thanks for giving it a go.

I’ve been playing with it ever since I wrote the above and have found a possible issue – I managed to kill all Categories and All Q’d posts by changing the DB User permissions to the bare minimum that I could think any host would be mean enough to do: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE

Needless to say, WP freaked when I upgraded and I had to scroll through pages of errors, but it “Worked”.

So, check your DB User permissions, that might be the issue as well.

O.K. Justin, where exactly do I do to change the DB user permissions? Also, Ingrid, how do I update the wp-config.php file with my db server info?

I also have a Linux hosting account and I was going from 2.1 to 2.3.2.

I was considering reinstalling the 2.1 backup and stepping thru to 2.2 then 2.3.2 maybe. Do I have to delete all the 2.3.2 stuff that I uploaded (that would be a major pain) or do I just double click the backup database and files to get back where I need to be?

Also, I’m getting a new error message this afternoon. Does anybody know how to fix this one?:

    “Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, support@supportwebsite.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Whoa – first, you need to tell us exactly what you’re doing. Right now, it appears that you’re getting a generic error 500, which can be almost anything.

At the moment, the best thing may be to replace any files that you have edited manually and attempt to get back to the original DB error you where getting. After that, you can edit the sample config file and rename it.

At this point Justin, I truly don’t recall what happened between the two error messages. Let me ask this though. When I backed up my files I saved them to my personal drive on my computer and I also saved a copy on the server where they have always been but just in a “backup” folder. Maybe that’s messing things up. Could it be that the new version of WordPress is trying to access my backup file folder and should I go ahead and delete it since I have it on my hard drive?

I’ll wait to head a recommendation from you guys. Then I’ll look at going back and reloading the original database and files before the day is out so I can’t get back in business again. I think going back to 2.1 then 2.2 and 2.3.2 is going to be easier that undoing whatever I’ve contorted at this point.

    Thanks…….Marty

If you’ve upgraded to 2.3.2 and you have no Categories you might look at the solution on this thread to force the database upgrade.
