When am I going to learn not to do any WP Upgrades until it gets to the version 3 patches. The last three major releases broke my site. This time upgrading to 2.9 is giving me a Server side 500 error message -

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@eee. and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems?

    - deleting/renaming your root WP .htaccess file?

Hi, I'm also getting an "Error 500 - Internal server error".
I cannot get to the log-in page for WP.
How do I therefore de-activate the plug-ins please?
(Do I simply view the directories using a file manager equivalent & delete the plug-ins then reinstall them one by one to see which one caused the problem or is it the latest version of WP that is causing this (I updated WP around 6 weeks ago.) ??)

    Thanks.

    just rename your plugin folder
    this will deactivate all plugins
    test site
rename plugins folder back to original and activate plugins one by one testing in between

    Hi Samboll,
    Many thanks for that.
    Much appreciated.

I did as you suggested re renaming plugin folder.
Site was then accessible in that I could access the WP login page.
However, every link I clicked on the dashboard then seems to give the same error, i.e.
"Error 500 - Internal server error

An internal server error has occured!
    Please try again later."

Currently, my WP dashboard informs me I'm running 2.8.5 & that 2.9.1 is available.
    Q. Should I upgrade or wait for a more 'stable release' as has been intimated in the first post above, where that person is also getting a 500 error?

FYI: my hosting company, 1and1, says ask WP support....
A second person there said I need to make changes as follows:
    what are your thoughts please?

"...you need to parse the php version of your webspace from php4 to php5. In the folder where your domain is pointing to, what you need to do is to insert this text
    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

    inside your .htaccess file.

It will then remove the internal 500 error but will display another
    error.
What you need to do next is to create a php.ini file, put this
file inside the folder where your domain is pointing to and then
    insert this text
    memory_limit = "128M"

    inside the php.ini file."

Not sure what to do with a php.ini file: is a a text file??

Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance.
