[resolved] Upgrade 2.6.3 to 3.1.2. Which versions can I skip? (11 posts)

    I'm pretty new to WordPress and am about to upgrade a 2.6.3 site to 3.1.2. I assume I can't do this in one step directly, so my question is:

    Which intermediate WordPress versions between 2.6.3 and 3.1.2 must be applied and which can I skip over before I finally apply the 3.1.2 update?

    Is there a table somewhere with this information?

    Thanks for your help!

    Are you doing this to your live site? I would make sure my theme and plugins are compatible with 3.1.2 first, then if possible do the updates locally first.

    Try 2.6.3 -> 2.7 -> 2.9 -> 3.0.4 -> 3.1.2

    Remember to:
    - switch to the default theme & deactivate all plugins before beginning the upgrade process
    - backup your database before you being & after each successful upgrade

    Thanks, maoski and emsi, for the replies.

    2.7, 2.9, 3.0.4 and 3.1.2 it is. Not as long a list as I feared.

    maoski, I'm rehearsing and researching on a dev site since unfortunately the site came with a bunch of custom plugins that I expect will break. Also, I'm not clear on just how much the former proprietors invaded the WP code, so I'm braced for backing any of that stuff out, if I have to.

    Ipstenu,

    I saw that page after posting the question. It looks like I should be able to upgrade directly from 2.6.3->3.1.2 albeit with a quite a few extra nits to fix along the way. I'll read the whole page more closely to see if I should do this in several version steps or all at once.

    Thanks for the pointer.

  6. Actually no... Read it again :)

    If you plan on upgrading across more than two major releases, please consider upgrading incrementally to avoid potential conflicts. For example, if you plan on upgrading from 2.5 to 3.1.2, upgrade to 2.7 first, followed by 2.9, and finally 3.1.2. Older versions of WordPress can be downloaded from the release archive.

    Huh? You expect reading comprehension too?!

    Actually this makes more sense although I note that two different sources say I can skip over 2.8 despite.

    Anyway, it's time to give this a go. Thank you all for your help.

  8. Depends on what you start with ;)

    If it's 2.4, you go 2.4 -> 2.6 -> 2.8 -> 3.0 ....

    See the sneaky math? Skip ONE major release, never two. Doe-see-doe and Allaman left!

    Nope. I didn't get "Skip ONE major release, never two."

    I guess after that allemande, I'm finally set up for a right and left grand which should bring me back home -- but with an updated WP site.

    Thanks!

    I'm going to edit that page to make it more clear, cause yeah, if you didn't know the sekkrit handshake...
