I'm looking for step-by-step instructions on upgrading from 2.5.1 to 2.9.2.
I would like to be able to create a test blog and then just copy over the files to my blog's folder when I've got it working the way I want - if that's possible and easy. If not, then just the instructions will do.
Thanks.
Hi,
Refer this article and check the automatic as well as manual upgrade.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress
Do not forget to take the backup first.
Thanks,
Shane G.

Shane, thanks for the response, but is that the procedure even if I'm upgrading from an older (2.5.1) version?
I have seen some trouble reports when doing this. Is that just a few exceptions that I probably do not have to worry about, or are there special steps I should take to avoid those troubles?
Also, if I want to do the upgrade on a test version of my blog so that I can be sure it's working (and maybe even change the theme), is that easy and/or possible?
You should be able to upgrade from 2.5.1 to 2.9.2 following the Upgrading WordPress instructions.
You could also do the upgrade on a test version but to do that you many want to review Moving WordPress and install that using something like XAMPP on your local computer.
