I just finished doing the upgrade from wordpress 2.1 to the latest available version 2.6.

My blog can be seen here: http://www.rickperry.ca

It seems, that after completion my categories have disappeared. I have checked in the back end to see if i could modify it somewhere to rebuild category cache or something, but no dice.

Can someone please point me in the right direction in resolving this issue.

    Operating system FreeBSD
    MySQL version 4.1.22
    Apache version 2.2.8 (Unix)
    PHP version 5.2.4

For such a big step I might be tempted to get ahold of some of the zip files for the versions in-between, and do the database upgrades in stages. It could be that something gets missed maybe because of the change in version. These things are less likely to be tested than, say, 2.5 -> 2.6.

I'm not sure that you will be able to press a button to get your categories back, you'd have to restore and do over.

Bummer, it seems I am not the only one with this issue, however theres no resolution know as of yet.

I will have to get someone to look at the DB i suppose, maybe they can salvage the categories.

This happened to my site too http://www.complexsearch.com/blog/ all that work just to get the tagging feature working is now giving me a fat headache.

ANY HELP, ANY HELP would be appreciated. Can somebody show me what their "wp_term_taxonomy" in phpmyadmin database looks like. I think I can manually re-write the categories - right? I feel sick. HOWW??????

I'm having the same problem -- upgraded from 2.5 to 2.6. All the categories are there, but displays "not found" when clicked. Also, when editing a post, and using the "view post"-option, I get the "not found"-message. Same when pressing status "published" from the manage-view in the admin panel.

Pardon the double post; just noticed; apparantly one can't click on the post or read the comments either, get "not found" there too. Most frustrating. It's as if the permalinks gotten screwed up, or somert.

//Okay, found a solution. No idea why, but putting the words category and tag in the boxes beneath the settings for the permalinks, seemed to fix it. Pardon for cluttering this thread up with this. However, should somebody else (like myself) wander in here by mistake the instructions for how to fix it can be found here.

I am having a similar problem. I upgraded my version and the categories and links in the top header have been lost and broken. I can still see all my posts and I can create new categories with no problems. Doesn't anyone have any new suggestions??

My limited testing suggests that if you want to upgrade from a version before 2.3, then you first need to upgrade to 2.3, then go from there to 2.6. Otherwise you'll hit the missing categories issue.

This may not help if you don't have a backup ;)

Well, i resolved my issues by using what I had been posting on my blog all along.

resolution to not seeing wordpress categories

Once I had access to my DB it was good to go.

If you do upgrade via 2.3 though it should save any need to go hunting around in the database afterwards...

Just mentioning chouxpastry2002 blatantly ripped my content and tried to pass it of as his own...
