Hello,
I have a client who has WP 1.2.1 running his blog. He wants to finally join this century and upgrade to WP 2.9.1.
Unfortunately, I cannot find any documentation on how to do this. That version also has no export function.
Even if anyone can suggest a way to export that install to XML that will help a lot.

All historical versions are available in the download section. I would make 2 backups of the existing site and then upgrade to 1.5.2, 2.0.11, 2.1.3, etc...
What microgroove said, especially backing up the database and server files and folders. To add: Release archives - http://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/ and when you reach WP version 2.2, you can export XML.
