Works for me. 3.8 updated automatically. Plugins all update automatically.

Can you provide any additional detail?

(Note: multisite network updates are still problematic, and I haven’t been able to track down the reason.)

    Hi Chip,

I didn’t have it set to push the 8.0 update. I set it up after 8.0 and set up everything to do major updates and plugins.

I just got an email from one of the blogs that it has updated to 3.8.1, and clicking through to that blog there are no plugins needing updates, so maybe it is just a matter of timing?

Does it notify on plugin updates as well?

Some plugins common to all of my installs:
    WPSEO
    WordFence
    Get Off Malicious Scripts
    Bulletproof Security

All of these blogs are hosted at Media Temple on GS accounts.

You’ll only get email notification for core, unfortunately. You could enable the debug email, which will notify you of all update attempts (including core, Plugins, and Themes), but that will give you probably more information than you want.

As for timing: the automatic updates are still being throttled. The core team has taken a ramped approach to rolling out the automatic updates, to watch for any potential issues (as it is still a very new feature). Eventually, the goal is for automatic updates to be pushed out immediately.

If you got the email, though: congrats! Core successfully updated automatically. 🙂

So, the core updates will be triggered by .org, right? I still have many sites that have not updated to 3.8.1, but that is just because WordPress.org has not reached them in the roll out yet?

What triggers the plugin updates? I also have plugin updates available on most of the sites that have not gone through yet after a number of days.

I assume that, if automatic updates are throttled, then *all* automatic updates are throttled. Once the automatic update happens for core, can you verify whether Plugin updates happen as well?

(Note: in both cases, the issue would be outside of the functionality of the Plugin – but I’m happy to help diagnose automatic update issues in general.)

Have you tried the Background Update Tester Plugin? It will point out any potential issues with automatic updates:

Yes, I realize that the plugin just sets the settings and from there it’s down to how the updates roll out. I was just wondering if you had more insight into that. I’m just concerned with the amount of time that has passed here and only a couple of sites have updated.

Also, I had expected the plugins to update without relying on a core update, otherwise the setting isn’t that useful. I wouldn’t really want plugins, in general, waiting around that long for an update.

I haven’t tried the plugin. All of these sites announced themselves as background update ready when I initially upgraded to 3.7 and I haven’t really thought about that since. I’ll put this on a couple and see what comes up.

Thanks for working through this with me.
