Updated to 3.8.1, Lost Access to Several Admin Pages (7 posts)

Last night I updated my network to 3.8 and can no longer access the themes, plugins, and updates pages -- when I try, the page is completely blank. No menu bar, nothing. I even looked at "View Page Source" and found absolutely nothing. After reading through what I could find on the support forums I re-installed the files (minus the wp-content folder and wp-cofig.php file) but that didn't help.

Thankfully the sites still function but I need access to add and remove themes and plugins. I'm wondering if I should go "backwards" and re-install the files from the previous version. If I do that, an it works, what steps should I take before updating in the future?

Before I go any further let me say I don't consider this to be resolved -- I still need to know how to avoid the problem next time around.

Since I could have waited around all day before someone noticed my thread, I went ahead and re-installed v. 3.6 and everything appears to be back to normal. As I said, I'd still like advice on how to proceed with the update so that I can do it "right" next time and not encounter the blank pages again.

What did you upgrade - WP core, plugins, themes? If you upgraded everything, then it could be anything that is causing your error. In my experience, upgrading WP core is very safe WRT site integrity.

What page is "completely blank"? Is it the home page or is it the wp-admin page?

The first thing I would try is to rename the plugin directory. The second is changing to a default theme.

Thank you for your suggestions. I was thinking I'd only updated the core, but then realized the problem started after began updating the plugins. From within wp-admin, I couldn't access themes, plugins, or the update page, so I wasn't able to change the theme or deactivate the plugins.

Since reinstalling v. 3.6 I've been able to update the plugins and themes, though I still have some problems whenever I save something now I get an almost blank page with a note that I should really update to v. 3.8.1 if I want to continue.

Since I've got all the plugins and themes updated now, should I just update again as usual, or should I deactivate them first them... just in case?

IMO, you have a bad plugin. You should really identify and remove that plugin before upgrading.

For example you might try disabling all plugins then do the "save" that would typically generate an error. It should work when all plugins are disabled. Then enable one plugin at a time and do the "save" to identify the culprit.

I don't know what you mean by doing "the save" to generate an error -- oh -- you must be referring to saving posts & pages. Ok, that makes sense.

Any thoughts on the best way to proceed with updating my network to 3.8.1 without losing half my admin pages?

Identify and remove the bad plugin first. Then upgrade to WP 3.8.1
