I manually upgraded to v2.8.1 tonight as I always do. I saved my old wp-config.php file, my wp-contents folder (and all inside) and uploaded everything else. admin page opened right up (no "please wait a moment until..." and it still says "You're using v 2.8, 2.8.1 is available, please update"
Updated to 2.8.1 but shows 2.8 (2 posts)

I'd suggest trying to upgrade again. WordPress' built in upgrader will work better for you, most likely.
