   Automatic update hangs after 2-3 seconds. I then tried manual update and followed every instruction but it still says i have 3.0.3
   Where on earth do I go now?
   Is it worth waiting anyway because I am told that another new version 3.1 is on its way?

   Did you deactivate all of your plugins first?

   Yes - did everything that was asked of me - still just hangs. I think I wilol not bother!

   Thanks all - problem solved! I just deleted all files then uploaded the new ones. Hey Presto!

   Are you on PHP4 or 5?

   I think 1&1 still uses PHP4 by default, so you need to ensure scripts are processed by PHP5

   If you have PHP4 (you can install a PHP-info plugin to find out if you're not sure) edit the .htaccess file in the root of your WordPress installation and add the following to the top:
   

   AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
   AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php
