Hello,
I'm auto updated from the admin panel from 3.0 to 3.01 and the installation got stuck at 'installing' and the browser crashed. Now my website, both front-end and admin panel display 'Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.'
What can I do?

I found this tip at http://weblogtoolscollection.com/archives/2010/07/29/wordpress-3-0-1-released/
Go into your blog's root directory via FTP and delete the .maintenance file. Things should go back to normal after that.
Worked for me, at least.

I'm having the same problem, and there's no .maintenance file to delete.
Can't get at the dashboard. Here's the error message that comes up:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_option() in /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/blog/wp-admin/admin.php on line 22
Can't get at the home page:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp() in /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/blog/wp-blog-header.php on line 14
HELP!!!!!!!!!

Having same freeze issue with upgrading to WP3.0.1 - tried going in via ftp to hunt down the .maintenance file, but like lindafar can't fine it anywhere. Where exactly should I look? I now don't have a website - just a page saying I'm closed down for temporary maintenance.

Phew! *SOLVED*After a few minutes things returned to normal - and was able to successfully update wp from the dashboard automatically.

Mine upgraded "fine" (without any hangs or error messages) including the successful upgrade message. It was when I clicked on the link to get back to the Dashboard that everything went south.
Here's admin.php's line 22 and ff:
if ( get_option('db_upgraded') ) {
$wp_rewrite->flush_rules();
update_option( 'db_upgraded', false );
Should I be reinstalling 3.0 and PRAY that the site comes back??

Mine came back after a few minutes as well and just stated that installation failed and the re-attempt succeeded.
lindafar, manually upgrade the files and try again?

No such luck with mine. Can't get either the home page or the dashboard, still getting above error messages.
@ipstenu - manually upgrade the 3.01 version, you mean?

YEEEEEEEE-------HAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
maybe now I can stop hyperventilating!
THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS
No prob :) Next time just remember that if the auto-upgrade goes weird, the manual one often works :)
(I always do it manually, but I'm weird like that)

Lesson learned. Manual upgrades, huh? A little more work, but a lot more control. And not THAT big a deal.
(and backup first)
Thanks for the moral support!

If you are using an FTP client to search for the .maintenance file, make sure "show invisible files" is on if the client allows it.
Some FTP client software automatically hides any files with a "." in front of the file name, because most of the time people don't need to access those files.
(This is true for Transmit on the Mac. YMMV.)
Yayy! I have no problem in upgrading my wordpress! ^^ Just upgraded now.
Help! Having the same problem. Tried to update, got an error message and now my site is down. Both front-end and admin panel are blanco, already for 1 hour now :(
What is the error message will help pinpoint.
