On my blog, thetalmudist.com, which is using WordPress 2.7, I am trying to figure out how I can let unregistered users comment. I have read to go to settings>general>uncheck membership box; but in WordPress 2.7 they changed what the box controls, now it says 'anyone can register', but I'm trying to allow for UNregistered people to comment.

also, be sure on each post (bottom of edit post page) you have "allow comments on this post" checked

It's almost the same. Go to "settings"->"discussion" and check the box "Allow people to post comments on the article" in the first block and UNcheck "Users must be registered and logged in to comment".
